Chief of Army Staff, Major General Lawrence Kwaku Gbetanu, has issued a stern warning to those fueling the protracted conflict in Bawku, stating that the military will respond with full force to any further acts of violence against civilians or security personnel.

Speaking during a press briefing on Wednesday after touring the troubled Upper East Region town, Maj Gen Gbetanu made it clear that the Ghana Armed Forces would no longer tolerate provocations from individuals bent on destabilizing the area.

“I’ll serve a word of caution to all, especially those fomenting the trouble in Bawku, that their days are getting numbered,” he stated. “Any attack on innocent civilians or any military personnel will be considered as an act of extremism and will be met with the deliberate full strength and resolve of our forces.”

According to the Army Chief, there will be “no safe haven” for perpetrators of violence, and the military will not rest until all individuals involved are brought to justice. “We will pursue every individual involved. And justice will be served,” he declared.

Maj Gen Gbetanu used the opportunity to appeal directly to the youth in Bawku, urging them to abandon violent paths and work towards rebuilding their lives and communities. “Lay down your arms, return to the path of peace. Your future does not lie in bloodshed but in building, learning, and growing your country,” he urged.

As part of his visit, the Army Chief also held talks with the Kusaug Traditional Council, where he emphasized the importance of traditional authorities in restoring peace and order. He called for unity and cooperation to curb youth violence and foster mutual respect between the security forces and local communities.

This operational tour marks Maj Gen Gbetanu’s first official engagement with the Bawku security situation since he assumed leadership of the Ghana Armed Forces. His message was clear: the military is committed to peace, but will not hesitate to act decisively against any threats to national stability.

The Ghana Armed Forces, in collaboration with other security agencies, continues its mission to safeguard the peace and stability of Bawku.

GAF has called on residents and the wider public to cooperate with ongoing security operations, as efforts to restore normalcy in the region continue.

The public’s support is deemed crucial in maintaining peace and ensuring the safety of all citizens as the security forces work tirelessly to prevent further unrest.

The Bawku conflict flared up again in late 2024 after a period of relative calm. This resurgence was triggered by the return of Alhaji Seidu Abagre, a Mamprusi chief who had been enskinned in 2022 but later exiled due to his enskinment being declared illegal.

When the arrest warrant against him was withdrawn by a High Court in Kumasi in October 2024, his return to Bawku reignited tensions between the Kusasi and Mamprusi factions. The renewed conflict has led to violent clashes, including attacks on civilians and security personnel such as police officers. For instance, on April 13, 2025, three people were killed, including two young police officers.

The conflict has also caused significant displacement, with many residents fleeing the area to seek safety.

Tragically, over 40 deaths have so far been reported, including women and children, with violence spilling into neighboring towns like Walewale.

In a bid to find a lasting solution to the conflict, the government has once again sought the intervention of Otumfuo Osei Tutu II to mediate. Peace talks are scheduled to resume at the Manhyia Palace from April 28 to May 1, 2025.
