UE/R: AWE SHTS Students Use Their Laps, Bottom of Plastic Basin and benches as Desks During Examinations At Navrongo
In a disheartening display of infrastructural inadequacies, students of AWE Senior High Technical School (AWE SHTS) in the Upper East Region have been forced to write their examinations using their laps, bottom of plastic basin and benches as desks due to a severe shortage of furniture. This situation has sparked widespread concern among students, parents, and education stakeholders, raising questions about the state of education in some rural schools in Ghana.
Reports indicate that many students at AWE SHTS do not have access to desks and chairs in their classrooms, forcing them to sit on the bare floor or stand during lessons. This unfortunate reality extends to examination periods, where students are left with no choice but to use their laps as makeshift writing surfaces.
Several photos circulating online depict students struggling to balance their answer sheets on their thighs while writing exams, highlighting the urgent need for intervention. Teachers and school authorities have reportedly made numerous appeals for support, but little has been done to address the situation.
A student, speaking on condition of anonymity, expressed frustration over the situation:
"It is very uncomfortable to write exams like this. We have to bend over for hours, and it affects our concentration. Sometimes, our scripts fall to the ground, making it difficult to write properly," the student lamented.
A teacher at the school also expressed disappointment, stating that the lack of furniture was affecting the quality of education."How can we expect students to perform well in their exams when they don’t even have desks to write on? This is unacceptable and needs urgent attention," the teacher said.
According to the Teacher of AWE SHTS that Parents were asked to buy furniture for their wards during PTA meetings, but ONLY a few bought for their wards.
Due to the situation, students and teachers are adversely affecting the quality of teaching and learning.
We therefore called on Government, Non-governmental organizations (NGOs), Education stakeholders, Parents, Old students, and philanthropists to come to our aid of AWE SHTS. They are urging authorities to provide adequate desks and chairs to create a conducive learning environment for the students.
If immediate action is not taken, students may continue to endure these harsh conditions, which could negatively impact their academic performance and overall well-being.
Education is a fundamental right, and every student deserves a dignified and comfortable environment to learn and write their examinations. The situation at AWE SHTS should serve as a wake-up call to policymakers to prioritize the infrastructural needs of schools in rural Ghana.
