A report reaching Ghana Media Trend desk on March 7, 2025 by Zakaria Abubakari Olu Jakpa
Students of Yabum Junior High School in Damongo in the Savannah Regional capital are taking a stand against the alleged encroachment of their school land by Mr. Nyari, a former lands commissioner in Damongo.
Despite the school management reporting the issue to the Damongo-wura, no action has been taken, and the encroachment continues.
This incident, however, highlights a broader issue of school land encroachment in Ghana, with similar cases reported at Kurabaso JHS in Damongo and Academy of Christ the King in Cape coast.
The Ghanaian government and educational authorities must take urgent action to address this issue.
Dr. Kwabena Opoku-Adusei, former President of the Ghana Medical Association, emphasizes that the impunity with which lands earmarked for educational purposes are encroached upon needs to halt.
The Ministry of Education and Ghana Education Service must work together to halt the encroachment on school lands in the country.
In an effort to find lasting solutions to the problem, the school has written and submitted a petition to the king and overlord of the Gonja kingdom, Jira Bii kunuto Jewu Soale I.
The future of Ghana's children depends on protecting their educational institutions and ensuring they have a safe and conducive environment to learn.
