The Overlord of Mamprugu and President of the North East Regional House of Chiefs, Naa Bohagu Abdulai Mahami Sheriga, is seeking the government to lift the curfew imposed on Walewale and its surrounding areas in the West Mamprusi Municipality.
On the Curfew
Announced on Saturday, February 15, 2025, by the interior minister following advice from North East Regional Minister Ibrahim Tia, the curfew restricts movement from 6 PM to 6 AM daily.
A delegation led by Mba-Taarana reminded the government of its commitment, made through Regional Minister Ibrahim Tia, to lift the curfew within five days if the situation remained calm.
The curfew, initially imposed due to security concerns along the Bolgatanga-Walewale Highway, has severely impacted the local economy and disrupted daily life.

According to the residents, they are struggling under the restrictions, with schoolchildren in Kukua and Loagri forced to abandon their studies due to the heavy presence of armed soldiers.
Allegations have also emerged that some security personnel in the area are financially exploiting the situation, further fueling public frustration.
However, the Chief of Loagri has taken a drastic step by summoning the Ghana Armed Forces’ leadership before the town’s gods, seeking justice for the death of his son.
In the incident
The deceased, 34-year-old Hafiz Imoro, was reportedly clubbed to death by military personnel responding to the burning of a vehicle by unidentified gunmen on the Walewale-Nasi road.

Eight others were injured, with some still receiving treatment at the Walewale Hospital.
The chief warned that if the government fails to investigate and punish those responsible for the brutality, they will be forced to take matters into their own hands.
