SAD NEWS: 3 burnt to death beyond recognition in violent attack in the North East Region
Three bodies have been found burnt beyond recognition in Nanik, a community in the Bunkprugu/Nakpanduri District of the North East Region, following a violent attack on Friday dawn.
The victims include a 27-year-old teacher, Nashiru Maijida, a native of Walewale in the West Mamprusi Municipality. Maijida, who had been posted to the Nanik village two years ago, is among those who tragically lost their lives in the attack.
The charred remains have been transported to Binde Hospital for autopsy.
According to local residents, the attack was carried out by members of a rival faction from the neighboring community of Bimbagu. Nearly 50 houses were set on fire, and several properties were destroyed in the assault.
The violence is believed to stem from a longstanding feud between the two communities over the decision by traditional authorities to elevate the Chief of Nanik to paramountcy status.
Prior to this attack, the chiefs and people of Bimbagu had voiced their opposition to the elevation of Nanik Daana, a sub-divisional chief, to the status of paramount chief.
They had appealed to the National Security and the National House of Chiefs to intervene and halt the ongoing engagement.
At a press conference, the Bimbagu chief and his followers warned that Nanik Daana should not step foot in Bimbagu if he is elevated to paramountcy.
