6 violent senior high school clashes in 2025 (See Photos & Videos)

 


The apparent surge in violent clashes in Senior High Schools (SHS) has raised public concern in recent weeks, fueling fears of growing indiscipline among students.

With just two months into 2025, five violent clashes have already been recorded across the country, with students either engaging in brawls among themselves or clashing with local residents.

While fights in second-cycle institutions are not new, these recent incidents have involved the use of weapons, resulting in multiple injuries and the destruction of property worth millions of cedis.

This article examines the six violent clashes recorded so far in 2025, highlighting the casualties and the growing concerns over the decline indiscipline within schools.

1. Kinbu Secondary Technical and Accra Technical Centre—Greater Accra

The first disturbing incident went viral on January 28, 2025, when a video surfaced showing students of Accra Technical Centre chasing Kinbu students.

In the footage, some students were seen wielding clubs during the chaotic confrontation while onlookers screamed for calm to no avail.

Moments later, Kinbu students, now armed, returned with reinforcements for a reprisal attack.

Although no injuries were reported, the exact cause of the clash remains unknown.

2. Kumasi Technical Institute (KTI) and Kumasi Anglican Senior High School (KASS) – Ashanti Region

Barely two days later, another incident occurred in the Ashanti Regional capital, Kumasi, on January 30, 2025.

Reports suggest that the clash happened when students of KTI, returning from an inter-school competition, were allegedly attacked by KASS students armed with stones and machetes.

This provoked a reprisal attack, during which stones were hurled, leading to the smashing of windscreens on three private vehicles belonging to teachers, as well as KTI’s school bus, a notice board, and the school gate.

The violence resulted in extensive damage to property and left one person injured.

3. Salaga SHS—Savannah Region

This incident, the most violent of all recorded cases, took place on February 1, 2025.

Reports indicate that the altercation began as a disagreement between two day students during an entertainment event.

The dispute escalated when it was reported to their respective groups in Kpembe and Salaga townships, fueling tensions that led to a full-blown violent confrontation.

Described as a free-for-all fight, the clash left one student with multiple stab wounds.

During the police operation, officers seized a locally manufactured pistol and a round of ammunition from the scene.

A total of 20 students were later arrested on Tuesday, February 4, 2025.

4. Islamic Senior High School (ISSEC) – Ashanti Region

A violent clash erupted on February 14, 2025, between students of Islamic Senior High School (ISSEC) in Kumasi and local youth near the Baba Yara Sports Stadium.

The confrontation saw both groups hurling stones and objects at each other, damaging vehicles and causing injuries to bystanders.

According to the viral videos, individuals were seen aggressively throwing stones as others fled in different directions to escape the chaos.

Another video showed a civilian vehicle with shattered windows, its driver sustaining a severe head injury.

The incident was reportedly linked to an inter-school competition.

5. Sokode SHS—Volta Region


Sokode Sec Tech temporarily shutdown over clash between students and youth

The latest incident, involving students of Sokode SHS, led to the temporary closure of the school on Sunday, February 23, 2025.

The Management of Sokode Senior High/Technical School in the Ho Municipality of the Volta Region has temporarily shut down the institution due to security concerns following a clash between some students and youth from the Gbogame community.


Dr. Esther Yeboah-Adzimah, the Municipal Director of Education, disclose to the media that the clash occurred on Saturday night and Sunday morning, which is February 22 and Februar 23, 2025.

According to reports, irate youth from Gbogame marched to the school to take vengeance on male students who had illegally left the school premises and attacked some Gbogame youth at local pubs. 


The 40 students involved reportedly believed the youth were responsible for an earlier attack on a colleague at a bean eatery on Friday.

The youth, armed with weapons including machetes, gained access to the male dormitories, destroying some property. They attempted to attack the female dormitories but were met with resistance from police officers who intervened.

Several individuals, including students, a journalist, and some townspeople, sustained injuries. 

The Volta Regional Minister, James Gunu, announced a visit to the injured parties, who are reportedly in stable condition.


In response to the violence, school authorities, in consultation with the Ghana Education Service (GES), decided to temporarily shut down the school to ensure the safety of students and staff. Parents have been asked to pick up their wards while investigations are conducted to determine the root cause of the clash.

To protect students, teachers, and other staff, the school deployed more police security to the scene. Were the authorities provided buses to take teachers as well as students to their various locations.

Authorities have assured the public that those responsible for the violence will be identified and dealt with accordingly. Meanwhile, students and staff await further directives on when academic activities will resume.

Ordinarily, the school was scheduled to vacate in the coming days. 


However, the regional minister stated that, the closure will not "affect anything (academic work) so much. But we want the environment for teaching and learning to be peaceful for both the teachers and students." 

6. Clashes between Bawku Senior High School and Bawku Technical Institute



Five students sustained injuries during a peace ceremony between Bawku schools that turned violent.

On Tuesday, February 25, 2025, violence erupted out during a peace ceremony between students from Bawku Senior High School and Bawku Technical Institute, resulting in at least five students sustaining serious injuries and several receiving minor wounds.

The ceremony, held at Bawku Technical Institute, was organized by school authorities in collaboration with the Kpalwega traditional rulers to end recurring clashes between the two schools.


As part of the reconciliation process, the traditional leaders proposed the burial of the okra stick, a symbolic ritual aimed at fostering peace.

However, during the event, tensions flared, and students from both schools (Bawku Senior High School and Bawku Technical Institute) began striking stones at each other, disrupting the proceedings and causing several injuries.

The Bawku Divisional Police Command promptly intervened to reaffirm order, while the injured students were rushed to Quality and Vineyard hospitals in Bawku for treatment.

Despite the disruption, school authorities and the Ghana Education Service (GES) proceeded with the ritual, successfully completing it with the involvement of the senior prefects from both schools.

The recent wave of violent clashes in Senior High Schools is a worrying trend that calls for urgent intervention.

If left unchecked, these clashes could have long-term implications for education and society as a whole.

As such, authorities, school administrators, and parents must take proactive steps to address this growing menace before it escalates further.

Ensuring stricter enforcement of school rules, promoting conflict resolution skills among students, and fostering a culture of discipline and respect could be key to curbing these violent outbreaks.
