Coalition of unemployed licensed university graduate teachers appeals to President Mahama to address recruitment delay - GES

A coalition of Unemployed licensed university graduate teachers has urgently called on President John Dramani Mahama to intervene in the ongoing delays in the recruitment process by the Ghana Education Service (GES). The delays have left many qualified graduates in a state of uncertainty, causing frustration and hindering their ability to begin their careers in education.

In a formal letter to President Mahama, the group explained that, despite meeting all the necessary qualifications and submitting their applications over four months ago, their statuses have remained unchanged, marked as “pending for consideration.” This lack of progress has left the applicants feeling demoralized and unsure about their professional futures.

The graduates attribute these delays to a recruitment initiative launched by the previous government, which opened an online portal for university graduate teachers to apply for teaching positions. While this initiative was meant to address teacher shortages, the applicants argue that the process has become entangled in political maneuvering, leading to unnecessary delays in processing their applications. Despite the portal being open for months, no meaningful progress has been made in advancing the recruitment process, causing frustration among the graduates.

The letter also emphasizes the broader issue of delays in the recruitment process, which has led to a backlog of qualified teachers waiting for employment. This situation has resulted in significant financial and emotional strain on many graduates, who are left with little to no clarity about when they can expect to begin their careers.

The coalition of graduate teachers is now calling for immediate intervention from President Mahama to address the situation, specifically requesting that he:

Investigate the causes of the delays in the recruitment process to determine the root of the problem.

Direct the GES to expedite the processing of applications, ensuring that qualified teachers are hired as quickly as possible.

Provide a clear and definitive timeline for when the recruitment process will be concluded, allowing applicants to plan their next steps accordingly.

The graduate teachers expressed confidence that President Mahama’s swift intervention could help bring an end to the ongoing uncertainty. They believe that addressing the delays would not only provide relief to thousands of graduates but also restore public confidence in the recruitment system, which plays a vital role in the development of Ghana’s education sector.

The coalition has stressed the urgency of resolving the issue and urged the government to act without delay, allowing them to begin contributing to the nation’s educational advancement.

As the situation unfolds, many are waiting to see whether President Mahama will take decisive action to resolve the issue and ensure that qualified graduate teachers are recruited without further delay.

Thank you for considering our appeal.

Sincerely,

Selasi Gbadago
