The University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG) has officially suspended its strike action against illegal mining, commonly called 'galamsey'.
The strike, which began on October 10, 2024, was initiated to address the severe environmental impact of galamsey on the nation’s water bodies, forest reserves, and livelihoods.
In a statement released today, Tuesday, October 29, the association revealed that the decision to suspend the strike was made following a nationwide vote by its members.
UTAG’s National President, Prof. Mamudu A. Akudugu, acknowledged that suspending the strike was a difficult decision; however, the country's current circumstances and students' interests have made it necessary to explore alternative legal avenues to address the issue.
“We understand that this may disappoint some members of the public, and we do not take their confidence in us lightly,” the statement added.
The association declared its commitment to opposing those who exploit natural resources with disregard for the law or the welfare of the community.
“We will not relent in our efforts to bring about meaningful change in the fight against illegal mining,” the statement concluded.
