NPP’s John Kingsley Krugu halts campaign over Attorney General’s withdrawal of Bawku Naaba arrest

Dr. John Kingsley Krugu

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) parliamentary candidate for Zebilla, John Krugu, has expressed serious concerns regarding the Attorney General’s decision to withdraw an appeal intended to reinstate an arrest warrant for an individual claiming to be the Bawku Naaba.

Mr. Krugu highlighted that the Kusaug traditional area has experienced a year of relative peace, primarily due to the government’s firm stance in recognizing Asigri Abugrago Azoka II as the legitimate Bawku Naaba and opposing any attempts to claim the title illegitimately.

The Attorney General’s withdrawal follows a Court of Appeal decision that nullified the initial arrest warrant, a ruling that has reportedly intensified tensions in Bawku.

In an interview with Citi News, Mr. Krugu warned that the decision to forgo further legal action could jeopardize the stability in the region.

“This is a government that previously went to court to secure an arrest warrant for the individual claiming the title, and I accepted this move when it was announced. However, the warrant was later quashed, leading the NPP to appeal that decision to reinstate the warrant,” he explained.

“The appeal clearly outlined errors made by the judge, and yet the error seemed to be corrected overnight. This is why I have paused my campaign to seek answers. Discussions are ongoing, and I strongly believe a resolution will be reached soon.”

Mr. Krugu also clarified that he has temporarily suspended his campaign in Zebilla, awaiting a government explanation for this decision.

“I’ve heard some NDC members suggesting that I’ve withdrawn from the race. That’s not true. If they think they can gain politically from this, they should wait and see what unfolds,” he added.
