How to calculate CGPA: Grading points to determine your class
In simple terms, CGPA means cumulative grade point average, and GPA means grade point average. However, these two (2) terms are not the same. They are calculated differently.
As the name suggests, the term CGPA has "C,” which stands for cumulative. This cumulative simply means that the grade point average (GPA) will be calculated/added continually or cumulatively after every semester.
Breaking it down, the grade point average (GPA) is the number that represents the average value of an accumulated final grade a student has obtained in a course per semester.
To this end, the GPA for every student is calculated per semester for a course studied.
Ranges for GPA
Since GPA is calculated for ranking purposes, it has a range that helps to determine performance on a scale. GPA has 1.0 as the lowest and 4.0 as the highest when calculated.
Insight of CGPA
The point used to declare the class a student had after studying in an institution (awarding a degree) is the CGPA (Cumulative Grade Point Average). The CGPA is interpreted as all the grade points calculated for the duration of the course you studied in the institution as far as the course is concerned.
Formulae to Calculate CGPA: How To Calculate Your CGPA
CGPA = Total GPT (grade point total) of all courses taken / Total Number of Credits of all courses taken.
In other words, the CGPA means or is calculated as follows:
CGPA = sum (credits x grade points) divided by the sum of credits
How to Determine Your Graduating Class
To determine your graduating class, the CGPA will be interpreted on the scale or range. Mind you, the calculation of the grade points varies. Every university or tertiary institution has its own definition of GPA and CGPA. The class that one gets at the end of the program is determined by the GPA and the CGPA one accumulates.
The class that one gets at the end of their study of a programme in a tertiary institution is determined by the GPA and the CGPA they accumulate within the course study period.
