The University of Ghana has furthered its commitment to broadening educational access across the country with the opening of its new Kumasi City Campus.
This inaugural launch was marked by the matriculation of 26 undergraduate students for the 2023/2024 academic year.
Located in Ghana’s second-largest city, the campus represents a strategic expansion aimed at accommodating students who could not secure admission to the main campus due to limited facilities.
During the opening ceremony, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Nana Aba Appiah Amfo, highlighted that the establishment of city campuses like the one in Kumasi aligns with the university’s goal to deliver its esteemed educational services nationwide.
This decentralization is intended not only to manage the student population more effectively but also to enhance the quality of teaching and learning experiences across different regions.
Prof. Amfo emphasized the opportunities this new campus offers, encouraging prospective students and their guardians to consider the programs available as a viable route to gaining a premium university education.
The Kumasi City Campus, part of the College of Education, is fully accredited to offer a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration.
With the inauguration of this program, the university will begin to offer a range of undergraduate degrees at the city campus level. The purpose of this expansion is to create civically engaged individuals who can tackle both local and global issues.
In her address, Prof. Amfo also noted a significant milestone in gender representation at the university. Of the 11,246 students admitted in the current academic year across the University of Ghana system, 56.6% were female.
This reflects the university’s proactive stance on affirmative action for women, aiming to balance gender disparities in higher education.
Prof. Edward Nketiah-Amponsah, the Acting Principal of the Kumasi City Campus, also seized the initiative to encourage new students to take advantage of this opportunity to forge lasting professional networks and pursue academic achievement.
However, the joyous occasion was also a moment for addressing concerns. Tracy Afi Agossa, representing the matriculating class, voiced the need for better accommodation facilities.
Many students face logistical and financial challenges due to the lack of on-campus housing, a situation that the university management has been urged to address to alleviate the burdens on commuting students.
As the Kumasi City Campus commences its journey, it promises not only to broaden the educational landscape of Ghana but also to become a beacon of excellence and inclusivity in higher education.
