Following the major internet interruption, MTN Ghana says it has restored its internet network capacity. On March 24, 2024, MTN released a statement stating that it was supporting customers by utilizing alternate cables.
However, reports indicate that damage to undersea cables caused widespread disruption to internet services in Ghana and other parts of Africa on March 14, 2024.
The disruption extended to South Africa, Ghana, Kenya, the Ivory Coast, Liberia, Cameroon, and Benin.
Citizens in Ghana were unable to use social media or other necessary online services. Transactions using mobile money and bank transfers were also reportedly affected.
MTN projects that repairing undersea lines will require five to seven weeks. It stated in a statement, "We will update you when meaningful progress has been made on the repair work."
Additionally, the telecom assured to restore any data packages that consumers had lost during an interruption in service. This is in keeping with earlier recommendations made by Dr. Joe Anokye, Director General of the National Communications Authority, who stated that in the wake of the recent internet interruptions, he expected mobile network carriers to compensate users. With over 60 percent of the Ghanaian market, MTN is the network with the most market share.
