UTAG appealed for clearance to recruit more lecturers to tackle the ‘unacceptable’ lecturer-to-student ratio.

UTAG appealed for clearance to recruit more lecturers to tackle the ‘unacceptable’ lecturer-to-student ratio.

The University Teacher Association of Ghana (UTAG) is formally appealing for clearance from the government to recruit additional faculty members.

According to UTAG, the goal is to reduce the “unacceptable” lecturer-to-student ratio in the various universities.

UTAG explained that the current lecturer-to-student ratio is adversely affecting academic quality and, most importantly, the health of our members.

In a communiqué, UTAG members of the NEC of UTAG were involved in discussions concerning lecturer-to-student ratios across public universities.

"Members emphasized their steadfast dedication to sustaining academic quality in Ghanaian universities. Unfortunately, professors today are faced with teaching classes of 200–1,000 students, or more, in all of Ghana's public universities.

"Without a corresponding increase in infrastructure and faculty, the situation is made worse by the huge numbers resulting from the Free SHS policy intervention," the communiqué stated.

The National Executive Committee (NEC) of UTAG has voiced concerns regarding the payment of promotion arrears that have been delayed for longer than three (3) months.

In order to specifically address the arrears accumulated during the promotion cycle, members argued for equitable and practical pay methods.

The release stated, "Members further argued that there should be fairness since most external reviews and promotion examination processes almost always exceed one year."
