"We are preparing for another pandemic," - World Health Organization (WHO).
At a media meeting on Wednesday, November 8, 2023, Dr. Matshidiso Moeti, Regional Director of the World Health Organization's (WHO) Regional Office for Africa, emphasized the significance of preparing for the next pandemic.
This happened at the African Parliamentary High-Level Conference on Strengthening Health Security Preparedness being held in Accra by the WHO Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) and the Parliament.
The World Health Organization is keeping a close eye on prospective pandemics and making preparations for them, according to Dr. Moeti.
She highlighted the necessity of being vigilant in preparing for a potential pandemic outbreak and linked this concern to a variety of recent human activities as well as the introduction of new species.
In response to queries on the planned Pandemic Accord, Dr. Moeti made it clear that the goal of the agreement is not to undermine national sovereignty.
Dr. Moeti emphasized that the primary goal of the WHO Pandemic pact is to enhance activities related to pandemic prevention, preparedness, and response. She acknowledged that stakeholders, including legislators, have expressed concerns about the potential ramifications of the pact in the event that Ghana signed it.
