CHECK OUT: Reopening Revised Date for SHS1 Students

Regarding the reopening date of SHS1, the teacher unions in Ghana issued their sincere appreciation to Dr. Eric Nkansah, the Director General of the Ghana Education Service, in a linked letter dated November 29.

In the letter, concerns about placement and reopening dates being too close together as well as the short Christmas break are raised, and an update of the reopening date for SHS1 students in the 2023/2024 academic year is requested.

Concerning the present timetable for Senior High School reopening, especially for SHS1 students, Teacher Unions have voiced their concerns. On November 28th, first-year students were assigned to senior high schools, and this process is still ongoing.

The unions contend that there are difficulties for staff and students due to the short time span between placement and reopening. It is considered unfeasible to ask Form 1 students to report on December 4 and then send them home for the Christmas vacation on December 21. They argue that this puts an excessive load on parents, teachers, and students alike.

It is said that the holiday, which falls between December 21 and January 2, 2024, will not give teaching and non-teaching staff enough time to have adequate relaxation. The unions stress the necessity of striking a balance between work and play and the significance of providing a sufficient pause for renewal in light of the demanding nature of their jobs.

The Teacher Unions humbly request that the Ghana Education Service Management reevaluate the current schedule with regard of these interests. To address the real-world issues that parents, teachers, and students are facing, they support a careful review of the location and reopening schedule.

The unions stress how crucial it is to design a timetable that permits students to transfer smoothly while still providing ample time off for the holidays.
