In the Bibiani Forest District in the Western North Region, the Anwiaso East Forest Reserve in Manse, close to Diaso, was the site of an operation on Wednesday by the Forestry Commission's Rapid Response Unit.
The aim of the operation was to drive away illegal miners, who were thought to have the support of some political figures in the area, who had broken into the reserve using large machinery, damaging the forest cover, and contaminating water sources.
During the operation, ten illegal miners were taken into custody by the Armed Unit of the Commission.
At the illegal mining site, the team totally demolished two heavy-duty electrical plants and two excavators.
For security purposes, the suspects have been taken to the Dunkwa Police station.
After that, they'll be taken to the Western North Region's relevant police jurisdiction, where they'll be subject to the full force of the law.
Samuel Darko-Akonor, the Coordinator of the Rapid Response Unit, has issued a warning to other offenders to cease these kind of illegal actions.
In order to preserve the forest and water sources, he said, the unit is ready to take the battle to them.
