A student from the Jaramogi University committed suicide after the break up with his girlfriend
On a gloomy Friday morning, close to the Milai hostel where Otieno was staying, the tragic incident took place. When he skipped his morning classes, his classmates and friends were really worried and started looking for him. His lifeless body was shockingly found close to an uncompleted five-storey building, frightening the neighborhood.
Authorities from the neighborhood, including those from the Bondo police station, arrived on the scene without delay. As a part of their ongoing inquiry into the unfortunate event, they carried Otieno's remains to Bondo Hospital.
Otieno's close pals, including Titus Eyamah, revealed that since his fiancée unexpectedly broke their relationship and went on to a new boyfriend, he had been experiencing severe emotional turmoil. Otieno was in a depressed state as a result of the breakup and additional stresses like recently announced exam results and higher semester tuition at the university.
This tragic incident brings attention to the crucial issue of mental health, particularly among young people in Kenya.
According to the Kenya Mental Health Policy, a sizable portion of outpatients who go to medical facilities exhibit signs of mental disease. The Kenya Demographic Health Survey 2022 also reveals that rates of depression vary significantly among demographic groups and geographical areas, with important roles played by factors like poverty, unemployment, sickness, relationships, and drug abuse.
