Anyebas James, a 23-year-old level 200 student at the University of Development Studies (UDS), was found guilty of defrauding a businessman in Nkwanta South Municipality and was given a 12-month prison sentence with hard labor by the Nkwanta District Court.
The convict was found guilty after entering a plea of guilty.
A Haojue DR motorcycle that was for sale was put on the defendant's Facebook wall and WhatsApp status on July 10 of this year, according to police inspector Bright Nana Nkansah, who testified in front of the judge Joseph Evans Anang Okrupa.
According to the prosecution, Mr. S.K. Kwasi, the complainant, indicated interest in buying the motorcycle listed.
He stated that the buyer agreed to the convict's request that the money be made to his Momo account in order to expedite the transfer of the motorcycle to him after the complainant got in touch with him and they negotiated a price of GHC8,500.
Inspector Nkansah said, "The convict demanded additional GH1,100 to assist in the registration of the motorbike, which he did making a total of GH9,600." This was after paying the complete payment.
After numerous failed attempts to contact him, the prisoner fled to Nalerigu after failing to uphold his end of the contract.
He stated that after making a report to the Nkwanta Police Department, Mr. Kwasi was apprehended at his hiding place as a result of the inquiry.
He was summoned before the court and accepted a guilty plea; his family then contributed GH4,000 to make up for some of the money he had stolen and given to the court.
To serve as a deterrent to him and others to refrain from such conduct, he was subsequently sentenced to a 12-month prison terms.
