KNUST and other universities to introduce a mortuary science course

The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Mortuaries and Funeral Facilities Agency, Dr. Yaw Twerefuor, disclosed that anyone who wishes to work in the mortuary industry would be required to obtain a certificate from an accredited institution.

According to him, the course that is yet to be offered at various universities is mortuary science, which will allow students to study corpses in funeral homes or mortuaries.

However, Dr. Yaw Twerefuor stated “We have reached out to KNUST with all the necessary documentation for the course to be introduced at the university and other private schools in Accra like Pentecost University that have also shown interest”.

In an interview with Mr. Yaw Twerefuor on Angel FM Kumasi, he disclosed that Ghana has never taught in the past anyone in the formal sector in mortuary science, which explains why the decision to add the course to universities was made.

The CEO sobbed, "In other countries, it is a degree course, but in Ghana, none of our mortuary attendants has a certificate, let alone a degree.

He added that any educational institution that wants to offer such a course must obtain accreditation from the Mortuaries and Funeral Facilities Agency.

"They must bring their curriculum so that we can accredit them as qualified to lead the course. We will create their exam questions and oversee it," he stated.

He hopes that the new legislation will help country's mortuary the industry grow and become more appealing.

The Health Institutions and Facilities established the Mortuaries and Funeral Facilities Agency on December 31, 2011, in accordance with ACT 829.

It is in charge of approving, monitoring, and regulating facilities concerned in the transportation, storage, and disposal of human remains.
