Organized labour threatens public sector shut down over debt programme [TUC]

On Tuesday, December 27, 2022, all public sector employees will go on an indefinite strike, according to organized labour.

The organization has requested the government to guarantee that its debt swap program won't have an impact on their pension funds.

As part of its attempts to assist the economy stabilize, the government has started a debt swap scheme to help manage its debt.

Institutional bondholders are anticipated to exchange their bonds for new ones as part of the program. However, organized labor worries that its clients' pension funds would be impacted.

Dr. Yaw Baah, Secretary General of the Trades Union Congress (TUC), spoke to the media and stated that the strike will end once the government complied with their demands.

We are requesting that the government exempt us from the debt swap program. We've previously warned everyone that we will give ourselves advice if the government doesn't act in that way. We are here to share the guidance today. The guidance is straightforward. We have all resolved that all Ghanaian employees will go on strike on December 27, 2022, and we will stay on strike until our demands are satisfied because the government has failed to accede to our request.
