Report to UEW Council presented by the Peace and Reconciliation Committee

The University of Education, Winneba (UEW) Governing Council established a six-members  Peace and Reconciliation Committee as part of a plan to settle all outstanding disputes and establish long-lasting peace on campus. The Committee has now submitted its final report to the Council.

This happened on November 23, 2022, on the North Campus of the University of Exeter.

The six-member Committee's chairman, labour expert and university council member Mr. Alex Bonney, stated that the Committee had received over 100 petitions from academic and non-academic staff members. He claimed that among the matters discussed by the Committee were promotions, terminations of appointments, punitive transfers, and non-confirmation of various positions.

Mr. Alex Bonney, Labour Expert and Chairman of the Committee

The Committee made a number of recommendations and observations after evaluating the overall situation, taking into account the university's statutes, our own act establishing the university, the labor act, the 1992 constitution, the various International Labor Organization (ILO) conventions, and finally the regulations. The need to revisit our statute is one of the key suggestions in our study.

"According to our observations, the Council will need to establish a permanent committee on employment and labor relations. Additionally crucial is having a thorough HR manual and policy to direct labor interactions, "Bonney asserted.

Nana Ofori Ansah I, UEW Council Chair

The UEW Governing Council's Chairman, Nana Ofori Ansah I, told the Committee that the Council was determined to put the pertinent suggestions in the report into practice.
It will be discussed in greater detail, particularly with the appointing authority and other legal parties, before being submitted to the Council at the upcoming Council meeting. We should never have to go through such experiences again, as we always say. Instead of building empires, our goal is to leave a legacy. Nana Ofori Ansah I said, "I'm absolutely certain that this work ought to be one of the legacies that all of us here should live and be proud of.

Prof. Mawutor Avoke

Prof. Mawutor Avoke, the vice chancellor, emphasized the significance of creating a successful institution based on equity, fairness, and unity.

Prof. Avoke said, "Since the goal is to create that unity, oneness, and reconciliation, we as humans, institutions, and individuals, may not have achieved an absolute result but we've given it a significant shot and I think that this forms a cardinal framework for the agenda forward and in the days following, we will see how this translates into reality at the concreteness of it to inspire staff to perform at their best."

Mrs Wilhelmina Tete-Mensah

The Ag. Registrar, Mrs. Wilhelmina Tete-Mensah, spoke on behalf of Management and thanked the Chairman of the University Council for his impartial leadership as well as the six members of the committee for their hard work.

"We believe that the report submitted will help us overcome, if not all, then at least most of the difficulties that we have encountered and continue to bring members together," she said. "Together, we'll all build an environment that will support us to work and enjoy whatever we do on this campus."
