Champions of the 2022 GUSA Games present Laurels to UEW Management

On Wednesday, November 23, 2022, the management of the University of Education, Winneba received trophies and medals from the winners of the 27th Ghana University Sports Association (GUSA) games (UEW). The games were held at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST).

The contingents emerged as the undisputed overall winners of the biennial public university games after winning the most gold, silver, and bronze medals as well as individual prizes in the history of the competition. Out of the 70 gold, 70 silver, and 70 bronze medals up for grabs for the competition's 12 disciplines, they collected 22 gold, 22 silver, and 17 bronze. UEW alone took home 10 of the 24 individual awards available for the 14 participating colleges.

Dr. Emmanuel Osei Sarpong, Chairman of the Amalgamated Sports Clubs and head of the UEW delegation, spoke about how happy his team was with management's tremendous support in helping them defeat 13 universities at the recently concluded GUSA games, which were held from Friday, 4 November to Saturday, 19 November 2022.

"We took home nine individual awards. In handball, UEW defeated everyone, men and women alike. UEW was adjudged the overall winner of the games. In the history of GUSA, this is the first time that a university has won all the goal medals in a discipline. Our enviable position as the best university overall at the games was a result of us winning all six of the gold medals in badminton, Dr. Sarpong said.

The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Mawutor Avoke, praised the team's perseverance and accomplishments for reaching such a noteworthy milestone for the university.

"I'd want to express my gratitude for the honors. The conditions under which the pupils departed this place were difficult. They ignored it and carried on with their task. I'm confident that what motivated the kids and coaches to complete the task was their desire and determination to do so.

The Vice-Chancellor praised the group, saying, "It is amazing that such a poor batch of athletes and coaches would return with the most incredible trophies ever assembled in the history of the GUSA games. We applaud you for the character, selflessness, devotion, and the inspiration to fly the UEW banner against all odds.

The 29th iteration of the GUSA games will take place at UEW in 2026.

“I want to say thank you for the honours. The circumstances under which the students left here were challenging. They took it in their stride and kept working. I'm convinced that it was the desire and motivation of the students and coaches to get the job done that spurred them on.

“It is surprising that such an impoverished batch of athletes and coaches would come back with the most phenomenal trophies ever assembled in the history of the GUSA games, and we applaud you for the character, selflessness, devotion and the inspiration to fly the UEW banner against all odds,” the Vice-Chancellor praised the contingent.
