Conflict in Bawku: SSNIT and other businesses shut down

Conflict in Bawku: SSNIT and other businesses shut down

The Town of Bawku in the Upper East region is no longer where the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) conducts business.

According to JoyNews, the decision was made as a result of the Municipality's overall security situation.    In order to prevent their employees from being harmed, additional businesses, according to Joy News sources, have also relocated outside of the city.

On Saturday, October 1, 2022, SSNIT evacuated its employees and took furniture, equipment, and other goods from its office, including chairs and air conditioners.

The Mamprusi and Kusasi ethnic conflict has been raging in Bawku for decades, and it has resulted in the deaths of a number of people.

The Regional Security Council (REGSEC) evaluated the country's security situation last month and put further restrictions in place, such as extending the curfew to include the Nayoka, Kpalgu, and Manga towns and outlawing tricycle operations, a popular mode of public transportation.

Only employees of the Ghana Police Service, the Ghana Immigration Service, and the military were permitted to use official motorbikes between the hours of 6 a.m. and 6 p.m.,

According to a statement signed on behalf of the Regional Minister, Stephen Yakubu, by the Chief Director of the Regional Coordinating Council, Abubakari Inusah.

Due to the most recent development, retirees will now need to make the two-hour drive to Bolgatanga, the regional capital, in order to get their meager pensions.

Three people were killed and two others, including the driver, were injured when gunmen opened fire on a commercial vehicle on a roadway close to the Bawku Senior High School in the afternoon on August 16, 2022.

The Bawku Conference of Heads of Basic Schools (COHBS) called for the closure of the local schools last week, citing the recent unrest.

In a letter dated September 22, 2022, from COHBS' Municipal Chairman, Abugri Busia, to the Municipal Director of Education, the association expressed its sadness about the local security issues.

"We wish to appeal to you to close down basic schools in the municipality, pending improvement in the security situation," it said. "Following the insecurity and the ensuing ban on tricycles."

According to the release, the safety of schoolchildren and instructors could not be assured in the aftermath of the region's rekindled hostilities.                                                        For the benefit of schoolchildren and their future, it said, "We desire to appeal to all factions to lay down their weapons and allow peace to reign."

Due to the unstable security situation in the area, the Municipal Directorate of the Ghana Education Service (GES) authorized the discharge of roughly 100 basic school teachers in the Bawku Municipality in March.

Azeriya Ayeriga, the municipal director of GES, revealed in an interview with the Daily Graphic newspaper in March that 2,247 students also skipped school out of fear for their lives.

A powerful group from Accra visited the area on September 25 to meet with the local youngsters under the direction of Interior Minister Ambrose Dery.            Along with him were the Chief of Defence Staff, Dominic Nitiwul, the Inspector General of Police, Dr. George Akuffo-Dampare, and Dominic Nitiwul.

The delegation begged the young people to settle their disputes amicably.

In March 2022, the Interior Minister made an appearance to respond to inquiries about the government's response to the security situation in the town in the Upper East Region.
