The Upper East Regional House of Chiefs has stated unequivocally that Naba Asigri Abugrago Azoka II is the genuine Chief of Bawku.
President of the House, Pe Ditundini Adiali Ayagitam III, stated that Naba Azoka II is the ruler of the Kusaug Traditional Area and advised the Mamprusis in Bawku to choose a suitable candidate among themselves for consideration by Naba Azoka II for enskinment as a Mamprusi community chief in Bawku.
"The Kusaug Traditional Area is ruled by Naba Azoka Il. If the Mamprusis in Bawku desire to be involved in chieftaincy concerns, they should choose a good candidate from among themselves to be considered for enskinment as a Mamprusi community chief in Bawku by the Naba Azoka Il. As a Regional House of Chiefs, we are requesting that the Nayiri persuade his kinsmen to adopt this choice in order for us to achieve long-term and sustainable peace in the region."
The Bawku-Naba, Zugraan Abugrago Azoka II has been on the skin for 38 years, and there is a great deal of affection and support between the skin and the Kusaug people. The fact that the Bawku Chieftaincy Dispute was resolved through due process/legal process is well knowledge. For the avoidance of doubt, we know that in 1957, the Colonial Governer, Lord Listowell, established a committee of inquiry to investigate the Kusasis and Mamprusis' competing claims. The committee determined that Bawku is a Kusasi territory, and that the current Bawku Naba family is the rightful successors and rulers of the Bawku Skin."
"This committee's finding in favor of the Kusasi was upheld and approved by the Court of Appeal (at the time, the highest court in the land) in 1958," he said.
According to Pe Ditundini Adiali Ayagitam III, the Supreme Court confirmed the legitimacy of Naba Asigri Abugrago Azoka II in 2003.
"The Bawku issue," he said, "should be avoided by politicians since, in our perspective, it is the midwives who have handled the labor for the delivery of this monster kid." They are told to avoid parading about in political costume and wreaking trouble wherever they go."
He urged the police to prosecute anyone found guilty of breaking the law.
"We can't keep allowing people with criminal intent to hold us hostage indefinitely,"
